UPDATE: Honolua Has Not Yet Been Saved
This season has brought much change in the situation at Honolua.  Earlier this year, Maui Land & Pineapple Co. withdrew from negotiations  to make the Honolua area the largest land trust in Hawaii.  However, given their current financial situation, a big enough monetary offer could be successful in securing the land.  The board of the Save Honolua Coalition is working on raising funds, as well as developing a management plan for the area to address the health of Honolua and other threats while making the most of all opportunities available to us.  Since Earthday, 2009, SHC has funded 2 port-a-potties in Honolua to service nearly 1000 visitors a day.  We have received our first grant to continue this service through 2010 from Hawai’i Tourism Authority.   Mahalo HTA!

GET READY
The Maui County Council is getting ready to review the all important Maui General Plan.  This will be our last chance for input before it defines the next 30 years of development.

PORT-A-POTTIES
Save Honolua funds the only public toilets in Honolua.  Human waste is a big pollutant of Honolua Valley and the Bay. For now, the powers that be require the toilets to be on the highway. We are still working on getting them down at the bay.  Mahalo to Megan Webster of Maul Land & Pineapple Co. for her help in getting grant money for their maintenance.

SAVE HONOLUA: THE MOVIE
We have begun working on a motion picture to raise awareness around the world about the story of Honolua and why it needs to be saved. The movie focuses on  Ecology, Hawaiian Culture, and Surfing at Honolua.  If you feel that you have something to contribute to this endeavor please contact us at kokua@savehonolua.org or leave a message at 909-891-0084.

NEW LEADERSHIP
Mahalo to Tamara Paltin for becoming the new President of SHC.  Tamara is one of the original founders of the Coalition and has been an amazing force for not only Honolua, but other eco causes on our Island as well.  Tamara is an amazing water woman and her love of the ocean translates into tireless work on a personal and political level.  Like her predecessors, Elle Cochran and Kahu David Kapaku, as President, Tamara directs her sizable sphere of influence towards our most important cause, to Save Honolua.
